MZIMKHULU RIVER BRIDGE: Single lane and Stop-Go planned, toll fee waiver extension requested
The local community is agitated that the plan for a single lane usage will create major traffic headaches, especially as the festive season approaches.
The Department of Transport has delayed the opening of the Mzimkhulu River Bridge from the intended date of Monday, December 2 to Sunday, December 7, due to ‘bad weather conditions’ last week.
This was heard at a stakeholders’ meeting at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality this afternoon, attended by officials and businessmen, as well as KZN Department of Transport’s chief director, Muziwakhe Sithole.
However, it will not be a total reopening – it will be a single lane opening only with a 24 hour traffic accommodation, including a stop-go.
The DoT explained that traffic signs for alternative routes would be in place.
In terms of the 100 percent frequent user rebate toll fee waiver at the Oribi Toll Plaza – which Sanral late this week said would end on Tuesday, December 2 at midnight – the DoT has submitted a request for an extension to the Minister of Transport.
Another matter discussed was the R102 road project – the section of road from the bridge to the Rethman Drive traffic intersection.
Stakeholders expressed concerns that this project appears to be way behind schedule.
