Ugu juniors serve up tennis goods at country districts tournament
They lost narrowly in what was a most worthwhile trip.
Junior tennis players headed inland to Newcastle recently, where they represented Ugu Tennis Association in a country districts tournament against Amajuba.
Ugu tennis also includes the Kokstad region, and there was a strong representation from the area.
In addition, not all of the top local juniors were available, with some off at boarding school and other commitments, and so a few Amajuba players were loaned to make up the numbers.
Still, it was a superb experience for the youngsters, and overall the contest turned out to be really close, with the hosts edging it in the end.
The players had a blast on and off the tennis court, staying at a game lodge and getting to see buck, ostriches and some other wildlife roaming around.
Aside from the tennis, they enjoyed the ‘foefie’ slide, volleyball, trampoline, fishing in the dam and playing pool.
They each received a certificate and a small UTA trophy.
The teams were as follows:
Girls U19 – Summer Dyer, Andrea Browne, Katie Weller and Tessa Fortmann.
Girls U15/U13 – Emma Fortmann, Khazi Shweni, Lily Dyer, plus Amajuba fill-ins Imke Prigge, Kyra Wade and Lubanzi Ledwaba.
Boys U19 – Huzi Sattar, James Clarke, Zak Moola and Seth Cubbin.
Boys U15 – Alu Memela, Nate Beekman, Liam Langley and Finn Stanford.
Boys U13 – Grayson Greco, Matt Graham-Jolly, plus fill-ins JC Marx and Wandisiwe Sithebe.
Managers were Sharon van der Schyff for the girls and Richard Short for the boys.
RESULTS
Boys U19: Singles – Amajuba 6 Ugu 2. Doubles – Amajuba 2 Ugu 2.
Boys U15: Singles – Amajuba 3 Ugu 5. Doubles – Amajuba 1 Ugu 3.
Boys U13: Singles – Amajuba 6 Ugu 2. Doubles – Amajuba 3 Ugu 1.
Total: Amajuba 21 Ugu 15.
Girls U19: Singles – Amajuba 1 Ugu 7. Doubles Amajuba 1 Ugu 3.
Girls U15/U13: Singles – Amajuba 7 Ugu 5. Doubles – Amajuba 5 Ugu 1.
Total: Amajuba 14 Ugu 16.
Mixed doubles U19: Amajuba 2 Ugu 6.
Mixed doubles U15/U13: Amajuba 10 Ugu 5.
Total: Amajuba 12 Ugu 11.
Overall: Amajuba 47 Ugu 42.
