Join International Coastal Cleanup Day
The data collected during coastal clean-ups provide more than a snapshot of the rubbish removed on the day.
Communities across South Africa are being encouraged to take part in International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19.
The national initiative, supported by WESSA Green Coast, aims to tackle marine litter while generating valuable information about the waste washing up along South Africa’s coastline.
Groups are encouraged to separate and record different types of litter collected during their clean-ups.
Particular attention is being given to fishing and ghost fishing gear, which should be kept separate from other waste and uploaded to WESSA’s Stop the Strangle database.
