PICS: Ugu Surfriders place second at 2022 Tidy Towns SA Masters
Surfing South Africa honoured three legends from the South Coast by awarding them with honorary life membership.
Event hosts Ugu Surfriders placed second at the recent successful Tidy Towns Masters SA Championships.
eThekweni were the overall winners of the event, and Northern KZN based Ilembe Surfriders came third with Eden Surfriders taking fourth place ahead of Buffalo City Surfriders, who prior to 2022 had won the Masters Cup 14 years in a row.
Cape Town Surfriders came sixth and the Nelson Mandela Bay Surfriders were seventh.
In the individual finals the star of the event was local legend and Ugu Surfriders stalwart, Heather Clark, who secured her eighth SA Masters Women’s title, at St Mike’s, which is her favourite surf spot in the world.
Another Ugu surfer, Scottburgh based Gavin Roberts, took the O35 men’s win with the 2021 O35 Men’s champion, Tyrell Johnson of Buffalo City, taking gold in the O40 Division this year.
The 2021 O45 Division runner up Paul Canning of eThekweni, made history when he won his first ever national title since starting his competitive career back in 1988.
The eThekweni Surfriders President and O’Neill Wetsuits boss had an even bigger smile than usual as he received the Trophy and his gold medal from Surfing South Africa board member, Ann Wright.
Two time SA open champion Wayne Monk of Buffalo City went one better than last year when he won the O50 title while his teammate and 1986 SA Open Champion, David Malherbe secured a third individual championship trophy for Buffalo City by winning the O55 Final.
The 2021 O60 division champion Barry Campbell of ILembe made it two in a row at St Mike’s when he took honours in this category once again.
The 2022 Tidy Towns SA Masters Championships has been hailed as the best SA Masters Championships since the first one was held at St Mike’s back in 2005.
Robin de Kock, general manager of Surfing South Africa said the event was expertly coordinated by Reg Horne and the Tidy Towns team, efficiently organised by the Ugu Surfriders Committee and well supported by six districts from as far south as Cape Town and as far north as Ballito.
“The Tidy Towns SA Masters Championships will be remembered for its great surf and surfing, excellent team spirit and the camaraderie over the four days of competition,” said de Kock.
In addition to the competition, Surfing South Africa was proud to honour three of the legends of sport by awarding Honorary Life Membership to Heather Clark, Lynn Maisch and Ant Brodowicz at the opening function.
