Anger brewing over Sparrow fundraising

She was fined R150 000 for hate speech after referring to black people as ‘monkeys’, and now some people want to pay the fine for her.

South Africans are fuming over what seems to be a fundraising project for KwaZulu-Natal estate agent Penny Sparrow.

This comes after the Equality Court found Sparrow guilty of hate speech, and imposed a R150 000 fine.

The ANC said the judgment against Sparrow “vindicated black people”.

“Many people laid down their lives so we could realize a free, non-racial, non-sexist South Africa, and those who threaten our fragile national unity with both naked and subtle racism have no place in South Africa,” the ANC said in a statement.

“The decision is a victory for our country’s courts and Chapter Nine institutions which continue to give effect to the values of our Constitution and Bill of Rights.”

Sparrow made international headlines with a controversial Facebook post which compared black beachgoers to monkeys. She referred to black people as “monkeys who have no education”.

Louise van Rhyn ‏@louisevanrhyn said: “I don’t know the people behind #PennySparrow fundraiser but I want to apologise to black people for unbelievable arrogance of many white people.”

However, some people seem to see nothing wrong in the actions of the people fundraising for Sparrow.

LesetjaMO ‏@MoLesetja said “did blacks apologize to you for defending [President Jacob] Zuma’s Nkandla gluttony? Whites defending Penny Sparrow are within their rights too.”

This is what other people had to say on Twitter:

Our people sleep without food in metal structures and folk have money to help Penny Sparrow. Something has to give

Sick to my stomach that there are people in SA fundraising to pay ‘s fine for being an unapologetic racist.
