MARGATE police are investigating two counts of culpable homicide after two pedestrians were killed in separate incidents in Marine Drive, Uvongo.
“The first accident occurred near St Michael’s on Saturday morning at around 7am when a pedestrian was struck by a person riding a motorcycle,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka.
“When police arrived at the scene, paramedics were treating the injured pedestrian. The motorcyclist was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for blood samples to be taken as it appeared that he was under the influence of alcohol.”
The pedestrian, Brian Soners (77) of Uvongo was taken to hospital where he died. According to police reports the motorcycle had no registration plates. On Monday this week Larry Barnette (28) appeared in the Margate Magistrate’s Court on charges of drunken driving and culpable homicide. The case was postponed.
In the other accident, a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run incident in Uvongo on Sunday at around 1.30am. “It appears that the man was walking from Margate towards Shelly Beach and was knocked down by a vehicle which then sped away.
Police recovered broken pieces of glass from the scene,” said Capt Mfeka. Anyone who may have witnessed this accident is requested to contact Margate police at 039 3129800.
