ALTHOUGH it has been exam season at Port Shepstone High, the school has been busy with various activities. A group of drama pupils provided entertainment in the form of a production at the recent ‘Cansa Relay for Life Survivor Dinner’ and the ensemble performed a forty-five minute show at the Hilton Arts Festival. The Executive Council for Learners (ECL) for 2014 has been elected and went on their Lions’ leadership camp this past weekend.
The athletics team travelled to Treverton and Alu Mbewana was placed 1st in the U14 boys’ long jump and triple jump, and also placed 2nd in the 100m and high jump events. Kelly van den Berg received 4th place in both the girls’ U14 200m and long jump events, while Rayne Redinger was placed 1st in the U15 girls’ 200m. Sarah Schmitz placed 2nd in the same event, but also took 1st place in the 400m for her age group. Jason Olivier took 2nd place in the U15 javelin, as well as a 4th place in discus. James Mellors came 3rd in the 800m and 4th in the 1500m open division. The boys’ basketball team came home with mixed results against Northwood. The 1st and U14A teams lost, U14B drew and the 2nd and U15A teams won their games.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal recently honoured its top scholars and it is with pride that Sheppie High reports on two past pupils’ achievements. Lukhona Afika Mnguni (class of 2006) a Bachelor of Social Science honours student, was awarded the distinguished Student Scholarship and the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary awards at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s ceremony in Durban. At 24, Mnguni, a founder of the ‘Give back initiative’, is a columnist for a daily newspaper.
Candice de Boer (class of 2010). The Prestige undergraduate scholarships were awarded to the three top performing undergraduate students in the entire university in a cohort of over 20 000. Among these top performers is the third-placed Candice de Boer (Bachelor of Science).
