A TAXI driver was arrested for transporting 14 goats in his vehicle in Southport last Sunday.
Police officers from Southport were patrolling the area and spotted the taxi. They became suspicious and investigated the matter.
“The officers tried to stop the vehicle but the driver sped off,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
“At First Avenue, Sea Park, the driver abandoned his taxi and fled on foot. Officers from the K9 Unit then arrested the fleeing driver,” she said.
Police were startled when they found 14 live goats in the vehicle.
The driver was not ‘kidding’ when he could not give an explanation for the animals. Fanile Cele (23) was arrested and charged for possession of suspected stolen property.
He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week and was released on R5 000 bail. The case was postponed to November 12.
The goats were taken to the SPCA in Uvongo.
On Monday the herd was taken to Kokstad SPCA where it will be kept for 28 days for the owner to claim.
Thereafter, if not claimed, the goats will be auctioned off.
