Life sentences for murderers

The judge said the men had shown no remorse for their crimes.

FAMILY and colleagues of murdered Chinese national Yong Zheng welcomed the sentence handed down by Judge Jerome Mnguni today (Friday) in the Ramsgate High Court.

Judge Mnguni sentenced first time offenders Siphiwe Zwakala (22) and Bheki Mpofana (26) to life imprisonment for the murder and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. He said it was important to note that the accused had not shown any remorse during the course of the trial.

On January 14 this year, the men entered Mr Zheng’s shop armed with a firearm, bush knife and hammer. They robbed the shop and shot Mr Zheng. He was treated for the chest wound but died in a Port Shepstone hospital on January 29.

Third accused Simphiwe Madiya (26) was acquitted of all charges on Tuesday this week. Shortly after the crime was committed, fourth accused Njabulo Mkhungo pleaded guilty and turned state witness. He is currently serving an effective 20 years. Judge Mnguni refused to grant an application to appeal.

“I’m happy about the sentence because they (the accused) are not going to be released soon,” said family member, Li Yunhui.
