ON SATURDAY the Islamic school ground was transformed into a fun-filled fairground. The grade 9 pupils, guided by their teacher Rabia Bux, played host to pupils, staff and parents from Wonderland and St Martins de Porres. Approximately 100 guests were entertained and pampered throughout the day.
The guests were treated to tea, coffee and snacks on arrival and gr 9 pupils set up pony-rides, quad-bikes, jumping-castles and a rabbit ‘pet corner’ to keep everyone entertained. Judy Higgins presented a gym display with the ‘Wonderlanders’ and each participant received a medal from Mrs Higgins. ‘Wonderlanders’ wooed the audience with renditions of ‘Lean on me’ and ‘Beautiful me’.
Each special child was presented with a gift bag containing a colouring book, crayons, stress-ball, lunch tin, juice bottle, face towel, sweets and a satchel. Throughout the day, they received personal attention to enjoy the day’s activities.
At 11am, the delicious smell of the braai wafted through the air, tantalising appetites. Cotton candy, cakes, sweets and salads accompanied the main course. Guests were seated and waited on in a tent decorated with colourful Chinese lanterns and food was served until 2pm.
The day’s events and experience reminded people how precious life is and how it should never be taken for granted. These special guests taught us how to embrace life without complaining. Despite their challenges, these children exude enthusiasm, optimism and tenacity.
