Quiet Diwali weekend for SPCA
The society says it had staff on standby, but the weekend was quieter than anticipated.
THIS year’s Diwali celebrations seem to have been quieter than usual, with the SPCA reporting that only six lost animals were brought in to its premises over the weekend. The society’s new manager, Michael Muller, thanked the community for taking extra care of their pets during this period. “We sold a lot of tranquillisers and I have heard that many of the veterinary clinics sold out their stocks,” he said.
However, many pet owners have taken to social network sites to voice their outrage at the loud bangs. One furious Umtentweni resident said his dogs and cats were petrified by the noise which started on Sunday afternoon and continued late into the evening.
“The bangs got louder and louder. I had to hold one of my terrified dogs in the passage on a lead, and it had been tranquillised,” he said. “You couldn’t escape from the loud bangs and you didn’t know when the next attack was going to take place.” If your pet went missing over the weekend, call the SPCA at 039 317 3362.
