Illegal structures found in reserve
Clothing and blankets were removed from the Uvongo coastal bush.
SIX illegal structures were found in a section of Uvongo’s Admiralty Reserve when members of the Uvongo Community Safety Forum, the SAPS and the Hibiscus Coast Municipality Community Services Officers conducted a recent inspection.
“We were hoping more residents would take part but the numbers of SAPS members and reservists made up for their lack of attendance,” said forum chairman Ernest Booysen.
Although the six structures found in the bushes indicated that people were living in the admiralty reserve, no one was found. Clothing, blankets and a big suitcase were removed from the bushes and taken to the Margate Police Station. Protection Services will try and issue the occupants with eviction notices, which will give them a 14 day period to evacuate the illegal informal dwellings. After that the structures will be taken down.
Compared to earlier this year, crime has dropped in Uvongo. The forum is however, concerned about the Foster Road and Uvongo Beach Road area, north of Uvongo beach, as this is becoming a hot spot. Mr Booysen said holidaymakers in this area would have to be warned about this.
He reminded Uvongo residents and visitors to report all incidents, even minor ones, as these reports were used by those allocating crime prevention resources in the town.
