Man killed in hit-and-run

The driver of the truck failed to stop but was arrested some 30km from the accident scene.

A MAN died after he was hit by a truck on the R61 near Munster on Monday this week.

Bonga Dlezi (25), of Mgangatho Ward in Port Edward, was walking along the the side of the R61 near the Munster crossing at about 3.30pm when a truck ploughed into him.

He sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene.

“The driver of the truck failed to stop at the scene after the accident,” said police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum.

“Police officers from the Margate cluster commander’s office intercepted the truck in Oslo Beach a short while later, and arrested the driver,” he said.

Andile Nimrod Cele (23) of Bester in KwaMashu was charged with culpable homicide, driving without a valid driver’s licence, and failing to stop after an accident.

He appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) and the case was postponed to January 17 for further investigation.

Mr Cele’s bail application was dropped from R4 000 to R2 000. He remains in custody. Detective Constable Mvula Maphinda of the Port Edward SAPS detective service is investigating.
