Farewell, father of the nation

A peace candle was lit.

SOUTH Coasters of all ages, colours and creeds united together to remember the late Nelson Mandela at a ‘Moment of Prayer’ ceremony held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Port Shepstone last Friday.

It was organised by Reverend Danny Chetty, the founder of Practical Ministries. He said the former president would be remembered as a symbol of freedom, forgiveness and hope for the nation, and indeed the world.

The gathering offered people the opportunity to reflect on Mandela’s life, and what he did, and how he was a beacon of hope.

A peace candle was then lit to formalise the occasion. Rev Chetty read out a poem written by Jagdaw Papli from Albersville. The poem was given to the Mandela family in Qunu last Sunday.

The nuns from Sacred Heart Children’s Home in Mtwalume, together with children carrying posters and singing songs, held a walk to the church to pay tribute to ‘Madiba’ as the father of the new nation.
