How to make a driftwood Christmas tree

THIS festive season why not make your very own driftwood Christmas tree. It is inexpensive and easy to make. It’s also the perfect opportunity to spend time outdoors, getting creative with the whole family.

If you are lucky to live at the coast, start by taking a stroll along the beach to gather pieces of driftwood and seashells.

The highlight is that once you have made your very own beachy wood-tree, you can decorate it with shells, silver balls, stars, candles or even pretty lights.

What you’ll need to construct the tree:

About 30 pieces of driftwood

1 dowel

1 wood base

Glue

Hand drill with a bit the same size as your dowel

Block/base to drill into

Ruler

How to make the tree:

1. Collect pieces of driftwood from the beach.

2. Decide on the size of your Christmas tree by arranging your selected pieces of wood from biggest to smallest on the floor in the shape of a Christmas tree.

3. Find a big enough piece of wood to be a stable ‘trunk’ for your Christmas tree.

4. Measure the length of dowel and cut it accordingly.

4. Drill holes into each of your driftwood pieces and base (trunk). Try to use a drill bit which is exactly the same size as the dowel in the ‘trunk’ so it fits well.

5. You can chose to drill one piece of wood at a time and then add it to the tree so you can see how each piece looks and determine which drill bit to use next.

6. Get creative and decorate your beachy tree.
