Police officer arrested for house breaking
The suspect may be linked to other burglaries in the area.
A DUDUDU SAPS constable was detained on a charge of housebreaking ahead of his appearance in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court yesterday. BJ Trading Store, which houses a supermarket, butchery and a bottle store, was allegedly burgled last Friday night. Entry was gained by forcing open a door and a large quantity of meat and liquor was stolen. Constables Lungi Mseleku and Rodney Shozi of the Scottburgh SAPS acted on information received and pounced on their unsuspecting colleague at his Amandawe residence last Saturday morning.
It is thought that some of the property stolen from the store was recovered at the constable’s residence. He led police to an address in Umzinto where more of the suspected stolen property was recovered from a man who is believed to have bought the goods. The constable has thus far been linked by the detectives from the Scottburgh Cluster Task Team to another burglary in Park Rynie. Investigations are continuing and the possibility that the suspect may have committed other burglaries in the area has not been ruled out.
The case has been postponed to January 20 for a formal bail application. Divulging the identity of the accused at this stage could compromise the investigations as there is evidence that he did not operate alone. Further arrests are imminent.
