Sunny start for new grade ones

The 2014 school year began smoothly this week.

APART from one or two tears and a little apprehension, starting ‘big school’ was a happy experience for the South Coast’s latest crop of grade one pupils.

Yesterday (Wednesday), when the 2014 school year started, South Coast Herald reporters were out and about with their cameras to record what was a red letter day for hundreds of new pupils – and their anxious parents.

When they visited grade one classrooms at local primary schools, the first day of school was proceeding smoothly and there were smiles (almost) all round. Most the newcomers were happily seated at their desks and were already settling down to the serious business of formal learning. And two little pupils were so relaxed, they had nodded off to sleep.

With registration of grade ones taking place early last year, gone were the long queues of anxious parents trying desperately to find places for their children at local schools. The only problem the reporters noted was the severe traffic congestion at many local schools. Parents bringing their children to school were also battling to find parking spaces.
