WELL-KNOWN South Coast detective, Warrant Officer Basil Crouse (47) was found dead in an outbuilding at his house in Umtentweni yesterday (Thursday) at 4pm. News of his death has sent shockwaves through the community. The top cop was dedicated to his job, and was instrumental in solving many high profile cases over the years.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel, Zandra Wiid, said W/O Crouse’s wife made the awful discovery when she returned from town yesterday afternoon. “She found her husband hanging from the roof of the outbuilding. A nylon rope was around his neck. Mrs Crouse cut him loose and called for help.”

Lt-Col Wiid said shortly afterwards Sgt Rommel da Rosa and paramedics from MedEvac arrived at the scene and started CPR. However, it was too late. “At this stage, foul play is not suspected,” she said. An inquest docket has been opened.

Many people have taken to looklocal’s facebook page to express their condolences to Det W/O Crouse’s family, and to say their last farewells to him. Natasha Victor wrote, ‘It’s so sad. He was one of the best policemen, all criminals were scared of him. RIP’.

Another facebook user, Mariska Barnard, wrote, ‘Missing you so much already. Will treasure our Wimpy breakfasts and I will never forget how u loved your Tabasco sauce. I knew what was in your heart. RIP Baz.’

‘Shocking news such a great guy. He will be missed’, said Nienie de Villiers while Cara Peterson wrote, ‘Love and prayers to the family and may he rest in peace’.’
