Port Shepstone Regional hospital grows
The new block will reduce the waiting time for surgery.
A NEW core block building was officially opened at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital by the MEC for Finance, Ina Cronjé, on Tuesday this week.
The new block will allow multidisciplinary teams to work in the same building, which means patients will not have to go through different sections of the hospital to get service.
The original ‘cottage hospital’ was built in 1934 but within a year was too small for the region which it served. Another block had to be built in 1976.
“As the years progressed the new block proved to be too small for the growing population. In 2007 the building of a block was started to address the critical space problem,” said Phumza Morai, the hospital’s spokesman.
The new block consists of a casualty unit, a patient administration unit, an outpatient pharmacy, four theatres, a high care unit, a sterilising unit, security services, and an intensive care unit (ICU).
