A POLICE constable’s firearm was used by her boyfriend in a recent shooting incident in Scottburgh which left one person dead.
Mfanafuthi Shozi (32) was arrested in connection with the shooting and has been charged with murder.
He appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week. The case has been postponed to Wednesday, July 9.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said Shozi had allegedly interfered with a group of people in the car park of a hotel in Scottburgh on June 28.
“It’s believed that he walked to his car and returned armed with the handgun. He allegedly shot a man in the group who later died on the way to hospital,” she said.
Lt-Col Wiid explained that the particulars of the car were checked and it was established that the car belonged to a police constable in Umzimkhulu.
“She was contacted by members from the Port Shepstone cluster task team and a meeting was arranged,” she said.
It was found that the policewoman had left her firearm in the car.
“It’s believed that Shozi brought the car and firearm back, but never informed his girlfriend as to what had happened,” she said.
Shozi was arrested by Captain Gert Bosman, Captain Zenele Khumalo, Warrant Officer Yugen Moodley and Constable Possy Pillay.
