TWO detectives, Sergeant Beatus Cele and Constable Sifiso Gigaba, from the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), have worked diligently in making sure that sexual offenders are locked behind bars.
Sgt Cele worked on a case where Sifiso Shozi (22) was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for rape. Shozi dragged his 13-year-old victim into the bushes at KwaNdelu area near Mtwalume in May last year. He threatened her with a knife and raped her. Shozi was sentenced on at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court to five years’ imprisonment on July 11, 2014 for kidnapping and 20 years’ imprisonment for the rape.
In another case in 2011, a 15-year-old victim was left alone at home in Umzumbe after her mother went to work. A man known to the family then raped her. She managed to get away and report the matter to her mother. Bheki Frans Mkize (34) was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court in July this year.
Cst Gigaba worked on a case where a 27-year-old woman was at home in Boboyi when Kampazi Sifiso Mkhungo (21) broke into her house. He robbed her and raped her. Mkhungo was arrested and after several court appearances, he was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court in June this year to 20 years’ imprisonment for rape and 15 years for robbery.
Cst Gigaba also worked on a case involving Sibusiso Blessing Madlala (33), who raped an eight-year-old girl. The man was known to the victim. Madlala was handed a life sentence at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court in June this year.
