Cansa is there to help everyone

The professionalism of the staff allows for a relaxed atmosphere.

A CLINIC is held every Tuesday at the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) South Coast branch in Port Shepstone where patients can book an appointment. The clinic is open from 8.15am and closes at 1.15pm.

Pap smears, clinical breast examinations and prostate specific antigens (PSA blood tests) are offered at affordable rates with the guarantee that the results will be back within a week.

The clinic also has a referral system which ensures that all clients are referred to the correct facility for further treatment where required.

Skin screening is done by a professional nurse who will refer patients for further treatment either to local general practitioners or to dermatologists where required.

The organisation has recently purchased a dermatoscope where images of skin lesions can be sent to the relevant doctor for further treatment or to be monitored for any changes.

“We also do call-outs, where screenings can be done in the community or workplace to decrease time taken away from work,” said Diane Saunders of Cansa.

“Our clinic offers support to stoma patients, we are able to order the stoma bags at very affordable rates and assist patients with stoma care when needed,” she said.

She added that breast prostheses can be fitted and ordered for each individual. The privacy and professionalism of the staff allows for a relaxed atmosphere while attending to specific needs.

“Counselling is done to assist with decision making, to help families through the traumatic time of diagnosis and treatment and to support patients by doing home visits for emotional support,” said Ms Saunders.
