Doug Whittle dies

The popular businessman was something of a South Coast legend.

WELL-like and respected South Coast businessman Doug Whittle (68) died last week after a short illness.

Doug was a good friend to many and he will be sorely missed.

Born in Elliot in the Eastern Cape in 1946, Doug was educated at Dale College in King Williamstown but spent much of his adult life on the South Coast.

Well known in the newspaper and printing industries, his career included stretches working for the Daily Despatch, the Star and, eventually, the South Coast Herald. Later he started his own successful business, Lightning Printers and Screeners, but eventually sold it to join his son, Terence, in an exciting new business venture, the Pure Venom Reptile Farm in Izotsha.

Although a completely departure from the world of printing, Doug thoroughly enjoyed being part of what quickly became a very popular South Coast tourist attraction.

A keen golfer and fisherman, he was a gregarious person who loved company and who counted many South Coast people as his good friends. He was something of a South Coast legend.

A much-loved family man, Doug will be sadly missed by his wife, Pat, his son, Terence and wife Karen, daughter, Tracy Hummel and husband Chris and by grandson Ethan.
