CHAOS reigned at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday when Balungile Pretty Girl Madlala (34) appeared for bail application.
Crowds gathered to hear the outcome. Municipal workers, Popcru members and family packed the court room, with many forced to stand outside during the proceedings.
Madlala, who stands accused of shooting and killing her husband and mother-in-law and injuring a neighbour in Boboyi earlier this month, was granted bail of R2 000 on the grounds that she was not a flight risk, had three children and had no reason to interfere with state witnesses.
Madlala testified that on the day of the incident she was attacked and assaulted by seven or eight family members who were armed with knobkerries, sticks and hammers.
“I was attacked and assaulted, I took the firearm to defend myself,” she said.
The court also heard that the victims were not shot repeatedly, even though some 15 cartridges were discharged.
Magistrate Anita Sesiah added that as the incident had taken place in front of two of Madlala’s children, aged two and three, it was essential that both the children and Madlala receive counselling.
“Domestic violence is the underlying cause in this incident,” she said.
Magistrate Sesiah said that once Madlala resumes employment, she must be allocated duties that don’t require her to carry a firearm, and that she should reside at another address. The case was postponed to October for further investigation.
