Father drowns trying to save son (4)

Both were swept away by the strong current.

A FATHER’S valiant attempt last Sunday to rescue his four-year-old son who had fallen into a river ended in a double tragedy.

Ebrahim (4) fell into the water at the Sandanezwe waterfall near Donnybrook and his father, Magsood Gafoor (41) immediately dived in to rescue him. Both disappeared underwater and were swept away by the strongly flowing water.

Police spokesman, Captain Vincent Pandarum, said Port Shepstone SAPS K9 Search and Rescue and police divers immediately responded. The team searched for Mr Gafoor and Ebrahim for more than four hours before recovering Mr Gafoor’s body.

Captain Pandarum said that due to the fall of darkness and the associated dangers, the search was called off until Monday. Ebrahim’s body was recovered at around lunch time.

Donnybrook SAPS has registered inquest dockets to investigate the deaths. The family lives in Donnybrook, where Mr Gafoor managed a wholesale business.
