Sharks Club XV hammers Griffons
Home-grown talent Lwazi Ngcungama was in the winning team.
THE South African Rugby Union (SARU) hosted a successful central amateur provincial rugby championship tournament at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe last week.
In the final last Friday, the Sharks Club XV hammered Griffons Amateur 62-12.
Griffons scored first but the lead was short-lived as the Sharks fought back emphatically.
Loose forward Lwazi Ngcungama, a former Port Shepstone High first team player, was part of the winning team.
“It was amazing coming back to play at home in front of my friends and family. Getting man of the match in the first game was a highlight. As a team, we came together from different clubs, so to get so much ‘gees’ in only six weeks and go on to win the whole tournament convincingly was special,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the KZN Wildebeeste beat Griquas NWK Rural in the plate final, 24-5.
Eight amateur provincial teams, made up from premier division club players, took part in the tournament.
During the prize-giving, Juno Fourie, chairman of the local organising committee, praised the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and the local organising committee for hosting a successful tournament.
“It was a brilliant week of rugby and I am sure the local fans enjoyed every match played here. Club rugby is healthy and we certainly have a few stars in the Sharks Club XV, Chris Micklewood, Charles Mayeza, Gary Collins and Carl Marks, who have the potential to play for the Sharks,” he said.
Man of the match during the final was Charles Mayeza and the man of the tournament was Chris Micklewood.
