A PASTOR, whose church was burgled while he was on holiday, says the disruption caused by the theft is nothing compared to the hurt it has caused the community.
Thieves broke into the Holy Ghost Tabernacle in Crescent Street, Lions Grove while Pastor Dees Govender and family were on holiday in Australia.
The church is on his property.
Before leaving for Australia, Pastor Govender informed his security company that he would be away for some time and would return on September 20.
While the family was on holiday, the church was looked after by a congregant, Boma Govender.
When Mrs Govender went to check on September 16, she noticed that a window had been broken and the church was in disarray. She duly contacted the police.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Port Shepstone detectives were investigating a burglary.
“A back window at the church was broken. Items stolen include a DVD player, an amp, a gas stove, a gas cylinder and an iron pot,” she said.
“I was heartbroken when I returned from my holiday,” said Pastor Govender.
“I placed my property and the church in the hands of our security company and we did not even get a note to state that the alarm had gone off,” he said.
“When I contacted the security company, the manager said the alarm had gone off on Tuesday but that the security officer had gone to the wrong property,” explained the pastor.
A car battery and a radiator were stolen from a vehicle parked in the property.
No arrests have been made and police are investigating.
