TIRED of crime, communities inland of Margate and Port Edward appear to be taking the law into their own hands.
At Nkothaneni location, Aya Shanga, who was believed to have been involved in an armed robbery was assaulted by members of the community at Yalo bus stop last Saturday.
Police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka, said he died from the multiple injuries sustained in the assault.
Two men, Ndumiso Mkhize (20) and Sthembele Dayi (21), were arrested, and appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week.
Capt Mfeka said the case was withdrawn due to insufficient evidence.
In a separate incident, Mandla Nqoko (25) of Woza Ward, Nzimakwe, ran away after he was spotted on top of the roof stealing metal last Wednesday.
The following day the community gathered and fetched Nqoko from his home and assaulted him.
“Police were called and were met by a group of men and women,” said Cpt Mfeka. He said Nqoko was taken to the clinic, where he later died.
Captain Mfeka said five people, Thabani Mqadi (23), Bheki Cele (40), Simphiwe Mtolo (19), Sbonele Dlezi (25) and Phumlane Dlezi (26) were arrested and appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week.
The case was postponed to October 6.
“We warn the community not to take the law into their hands, as they will be arrested,” said Capt Mfeka.
