A MAN from Mtwalume was shot and killed by a KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife officer at Mfazazana near Hibberdene last Thursday.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said that the officer fired two shots at a group of people with a shotgun and wounded Mazwakhe Collin Nombika (33).
The wounded man was initially taken to Turton community health care centre and then transferred to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, where he died last Friday.
Lt-Col Wiid explained that the group ‘advanced towards’ the officers and threw stones at them after the officers had stopped on the freeway near Mtwalume when they saw the group selling crayfish.
The officers gave chase when the group ran away into a residential area.
Murder case, public violence case and defeating the ends of justice cases are being investigated by Port Shepstone Organised Crime Unit. No arrests have yet been made. A comment from KZN Ezemvelo could not be obtained at time of writing.
* The closed season for rock lobster is from November 1 to February 28, both dates inclusive.
* Minimum size is 65mm, measured in a straight line from the point where the tail meets the body to the tip of the spine between the rock lobster’s eyes.
*No person may collect more than eight east coast rock lobster per day.
