TWO men from Amandawe, facing charges of attempted murder, were denied bail when appearing in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday last week.
Detective warrant officer Yugen Moodley told the judge he opposed bail for the two men. A group of Amandawe community members also marched through the main street in Scottburgh on the day of the bail application.
It is believed that on October 2 this year, two brothers went to visit the accused at their Amandawe home.
An argument broke out between the two men and the brothers over money.
The accused began beating up one brother and, when the other tried to intervene, the two men turned on him.
Both brothers were beaten with sticks and aluminium crutches until they were unconscious. They were admitted to hospital with serious injuries to the head and torso.
The assailants were arrested the next day, have remained in police custody since, and will appear in court again on November 21.
Community members said they were relieved these men were to remain in custody as they had terrorised the area since moving there a year ago.
According to one of the community leaders, Mthokozisi Ngwane, these men have been recruiting young ‘gang’ members, who have victimised the local community by committing house robberies and muggings in exchange for ‘whoonga’.
Another person said the community would sleep better at night now that these men were behind bars.
