A ROBBER was brutally assaulted by members of the community, after he and three other men attempted to rob a compound at a farm in Southport last Friday.
Three men, allegedly armed with two firearms, arrived at the compound where wages were being paid out last Friday afternoon at 5pm.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the robbers allegedly told the workers to lie down and then after threatening them, they ran off with the money box, containing the wages, towards the freeway.
The workers followed the men.
Lt-Col Wiid said a vehicle with one of the robbers was allegedly parked on the side of road waiting for them.
“The community members then allegedly attempted to stop them from fleeing with the money,” she said.
Lt-Col Wiid said that when police arrived at the scene, the vehicle was found severely damaged and a man, identified as one of the robbers, was lying alongside the road.
She said he had sustained injuries to his head and body, and was taken to hospital.
“Witnesses at the scene told police that one of the robbers had run onto the freeway, and gave a description of him to police members,” she said.
Shortly afterwards, Warrant Officer Sydney Seaton and Constable Timothy King from Port Shepstone TRT arrested him and established that he was the owner of the car.
Police members and protection services officers followed the tracks of two other men, but were not successful. All the money was recovered and two 9mm rounds were found at the scene.
Two of the men face charges of robbery. One appeared in court this week, and the case was postponed for seven days.
Lt-Col Wiid said investigations are continuing to try and locate the other robbers.
