Happy walker Darrell Day takes a break
The much-loved walker will be back on the road in the new year.
DON’T panic if you don’t see the jolly walker, Darrell Day (76), on the road – smiling and waving to passing motorists.
Darrell jets off to Canada to visit his daughter, Nicky Good, this Sunday.
The good news is that Darrell will be back on the road when school reopens in the new year.
The Mbango Valley resident starts walking from about 6.30am, and clocks about six kilometres on most mornings.
He sports his ‘happy shirt’ and a headband which has earned him the nickname, Ninja.
Darrell’s ‘ninja’ name stuck after a little boy said to him, ‘Darrell you make us so happy, we have named you as our ninja’.
Children adore him and, so far, he has received many letters, flowers and sweets from his fans.
“To see those small faces above the dashboard waving at me is priceless,” he said.
Even taxi drivers, policemen and paramedics love to give Darrell a hoot or quick blast of a siren when they see him.
Darrell has lived on the coast for about 20 years and is married to Jenny. They have four children, who live overseas, and eight grandchildren.
At his age, he is still working, and has travelled extensively in his life.
Although many people say Darrell makes their day, he quickly pointed out that seeing the joy on people’s faces makes his day, and in return, he receives ‘1000 blessings a day’.
Darrell attributes his happiness to God, who inspired him to spread His love through him. “God’s love comes in abundance, so, like my waves and smiles, grab it, use it and share it.”
