A MAN was severely assaulted by a group of men at the Marburg mosque last Friday.
Mohammed Affan Khan (21), son of Abdulmannan Khan, a moulana at the Marburg mosque, said his son was on his way to meet a friend when he was attacked by a group of men, thought to be from the nearby drug and alcohol recovery centre.
Police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum said Port Shepstone SAPS is investigating a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm following the alleged assault.
“Mr Khan was sitting outside a store at the mosque waiting for his employer to fetch him when he says a group of about 15 men ran out of the recovery centre and assaulted him for no apparent reason,” said Capt Pandarum.
Mr Khan sustained a cut on his forehead, bruising to his face and an injury to his lower back. Several men were arrested the following day.
It is believed that on Saturday evening, about 100 men surrounded the recovery centre and smashed several windows, demanding that the men who hit Mr Khan come out of the building.
Comment from management at the centre is awaited.
The men arrested for the assault on Mr Khan were charged and appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week.
They were released on a warning and the case was postponed to December 10.
The case is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Stefan Weber.
