JUDGMENT is expected to be handed down tomorrow in the case of the three men accused of murdering Geoffrey John Stuart (71), who was found dead at his home in Munster in February this year.
Andile Ma-ah Mzobe (20), Mluleki Morris Khowa (22) and Lungani Somahe Mbhansini (20) from Port Edward face charges of housebreaking with intent to rob, robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder.
Mzobe faces an extra charge of housebreaking with intent to steal, and theft.
The fourth accused, Steven Lami Mbhansini (21), pleaded guilty in Pietermaritzburg High Court, and was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.
According to the state’s indictment, Mzobe decided to break into Stuart’s property to steal valuable items.
He realised that there were a lot of valuables remaining on the property, so he decided to return, and elicited the assistance of three others.
Armed with screwdrivers, the men went to Stuart’s home, where they gained access through the window.
Stuart was in bed, and they tied his hands and feet with cables they found on the premises.
He died as a result of smothering and strangulation.
The men stole property, such as bedding, clothing, electronic equipment and cellphones.
