Positive audit reports for Ugu
Ugu managed to move from a disclaimer audit opinion to an unqualified one.
A TOTAL of 20 KwaZulu-Natal municipalities and entities achieved clean audits from the Auditor-General for 2013/2014, which is a massive improvement compared to the previous total of seven.
Umzumbe Municipality, Ezinqoleni Municipality and Ugu South Coast Tourism were among those which received a clean audit.
MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nomusa Dube-Ncube handed over individual audit reports by the Auditor-General to municipalities on Monday.
“It is the first time in our province that we have a record of 20 clean audits. It shows that we are a hands-on government that promotes clean governance and the integrity of our public institutions,” said MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
Both Umzumbe Municipality mayor Sidney Gumede and municipal manager Nokuthula Mgijima have praised Umzumbe Municipality employees for receiving a clean audit.
“Working together with dedication and distinction from all levels in the municipality from all heads of departments to the cleaners is the reason why we received this clean audit,” said Ms Mgijima.
Ezinqoleni Municipality mayor, Makhosonke Mpisi, said the municipality was very proud of such a positive audit report. “Such results show that Ezinqoleni councillors and employees are taking this service delivery issue very seriously,” said the mayor.
“I am sure everyone can remember that the municipality was recently awarded with the best performing small municipality award,” he added.
Even though the Hibiscus Coast Municipality did not obtain a clean audit the auditor’s report still shows that there were a lot of improvements within the running of the municipality when compared to last year’s report.
Ugu District Municipality managed to slightly improve from last year’s disclaimer audit opion to a qualified one this year.
“The implementation of the back to basics working methodology proved successful for the municipality,” said Ugu spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo.
“The announcement of the municipality’s qualified audit comes as good news considering that the municipality is moving from the worst position. This slight movement shows that the council is prepared to change the situation for the better. The municipality acknowledges the fact that there is still more work to be done in order to turn the situation around,” said Mr Khuzwayo.
Ugu mayor, Ntombifikile Gumede, has commended the municipal manager, DD Naidoo and his team for the hard work that they have undertaken to move a step towards the right direction.
