Girls give chase after being robbed

Police have cautioned against walking on the beach after dark.

TWO teenage girls and a couple were attacked and robbed in two separate incidents on Margate beach last week.

“The girls, aged 18, from Arlington in the Free State, were accosted by two men while lying on the beach at about midnight last Friday,” said police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka.

“The robbers grabbed their bags. The  girls chased after the men but stopped after one of the men drew a firearm and threatened to shoot,” he said.

He added that the robbers fled with the handbags containing two cellphones. No arrests have yet been made.

In the second incident, a couple in their 20s from Gauteng was attacked by five men on Sunday at about 12.30am.

“The men, who were armed with a broken beer bottle, forced the couple to hand over their cellphones and money and then fled,” said Capt Mfeka.

No arrests have yet been made.
