A MARGATE based police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding man at Bhokodisa Location, in Gcilima last Friday night.
Police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka said the detective sergeant was on standby when he received information that a man was harassing his girlfriend.
“The officer went to the house and came under attack by Sabelo Mbhele (27). It is believed that Mbhele was armed with a kitchen knife and attacked the officer.
“The officer fired warning shots with the state firearm but was still threatened. Mbhele was shot in the chest and died at the scene,” said Captain Mfeka.
The shooting has been reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). Margate police are investigating.
