Sewage spillage is a health hazard

The problem has been going on for more than a year.

RESIDENTS and holidaymakers are concerned about the sewage which runs down Delve Road at Uvongo beachfront daily.

“We have had this problem since last April,” said a concerned resident. He added that raw sewage runs about 100 metres down the street before it enters a stormwater drain.

“This happens every morning between 8am and 10am,” he said.

He added that numerous phone calls had been made to Ugu but the municipality had not fixed the problem.

“Holidaymakers park on this street to go to the beach and we’ve seen small children get out of cars and step in these raw sewage pools in the street,” he said. “This is a health risk, the municipality is breaking several environmental laws.”

“The municipality has dispatched a team to investigate and address the problem,” said Ugu spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo.

He added that this was the first time the municipality has received complaints about the sewage spill.
