Drought hits Harding hard

Ugu warns consumers of continuing water shortages.

WATER shortages are still a problem within the Ugu district.

Harding, under Umuziwabantu Municipality is the hardest hit, with the town’s water treatment works levels running alarmingly low.

The dam which is the source of water supply in Umuziwabantu, supplies urban Harding, Greenfields, Ghost Town and Mazakhele. The dam capacity has approximately two months of water supply remaining.

“The Harding community is urged to practise strict water conservation measures for prolonged supply from the remaining resource. Water conservation and preservation in all forms is the municipality’s best bet to continued supply,” said Ugu spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo.

Households and businesses are urged to refrain from using hosepipes for washing motor vehicles, motorcycles, boats, paths and paved areas.

“It is important that communities understand that failure to adhere to these requests will lead to a serious drought and major struggles in January and beyond if no serious rainfall occurs,” he said.

He added that in cases where the system failed to supply the demand the municipality would periodically conduct water restrictions and release water tankers for relief.

“While Ugu finds solutions to identified challenges, it calls upon the community to co-operate by using water sparingly,” said Mr Khuzwayo.
