POLICE from Hibberdene and Southport have received high praise for their help in retrieving a vehicle stolen from a yard in St Ives Crescent, Hibberdene last weekend.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said the homeowner and his wife woke up when they heard a noise. ‘They saw the robbers and gave chase but could not catch them,” she said.
Eugene Halliday, founder of the active and successful AZA SOS Neighbourhood Whatsapp group, said he saw the stolen vehicle speeding away when he responded to the emergency call.
He and another resident followed the vehicle, and a 40 minute high-speed ‘bundu-bashing’ chase into a rural area ensued.
In the meantime, Mr Halliday contacted the Southport police station, and police officers were alerted.
Mr Halliday said about nine police cars responded. “We would have never made it out of the area if it wasn’t for these officers. They should be praised for their outstanding work,” he said.
Lt-Col Wiid said that officers from Hibberdene, who were on patrol, found the stolen vehicle abandoned later that day.
She added that prior to this incident, another vehicle, stolen from Bahama Avenue, Hibberdene, had also been found abandoned.
