A BAKKIE loaded with cigarettes and hijacked on the R102 in Hibberdene last Friday, was found overturned in Mtwalume.
An on duty policeman from Hibberdene was passing a tuck shop on the R102 in Hibberdene at about 11am, when he was stopped by community members.
“They informed the officer that they had witnessed the hijacking,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
“They told police that the driver of the bakkie had been forced into the back of the vehicle before the hijackers drove off. The hijackers dropped the driver off in Mtwalume. When they drove off, however, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.”
Two suspects who were sitting in the back of the overturned vehicle fled. The passenger and the driver were arrested. All the cigarettes were recovered.
It is believed that the hijackers are from the Kwa-Mashu and Inanda areas.
Police are still searching for the two men who fled. Investigations are continuing.
