Off-duty cop nabs thief

The policeman was on his way fishing when he spotted two suspicious men.

AN off-duty policeman stationed at Port Shepstone, is credited with arresting a man with stolen property in Umtentweni on Tuesday this week.

Sergeant Lucky Joyce was on his way fishing when he saw two suspicious men in the vicinity of the Umtentweni beachfront at about 5am.

“One of the men was carrying a television set,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“Sgt Joyce approached them and one of them ran away. The other dropped the television set and attacked Sgt Joyce,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

A struggle ensued and eventually community members came to the policeman’s assistance and the man was arrested.

A Samsung cellphone was also recovered. The man was charged with possession of suspected stolen property and appeared in court on Wednesday.

The case was postponed and the suspect is being held in custody. Police are searching for the other man who fled the scene.
