‘No exceptions are made for pupils’

My daughter was told to come back because they had already allocated 100 tickets for the day.

DEAR Editor,-

I can understand this man’s frustration completely. (Stabbed with a pen – SCH February 13)

My daughter and I went to book her for her learner’s during the holidays; we got to the licensing office at 6.30am and there was a queue of 77 people ahead of us – some had been there from 4am.

After my daughter got through all the figure printing and secured an appointment for January 22 at 12 noon, we left the office at 12.30pm exhausted.

For the test she had to excuse herself from school and unfortunately failed by 2 points. She then tried to reschedule immediately, but she was told that she would have to come back because they had already allocated the 100 tickets for the day.

Because we live in Harding, her aunt took her back a week later, on a Friday afternoon, to see if they couldn’t try to help her out, only to be told she must come back during the school holidays or come back if she can take time off school.

Since my daughter is in matric this year, one would think that the licensing department would make an exception for pupils since they are at school till 2pm, so when do they expect them to get these bookings done?

I phoned the department and explained this all to them, but the woman who answered the phone just said: “Sorry, she will have to come back during the holidays.” Oh my, they are just so frustrating. Anyway, we will get this sorted out.
