Umtamvuna Marine Conservancy talks about conservation in Port Edward
Local conservation stakeholders focused on environmental protection and invasive plants.
The Umtamvuna Marine Conservancy hosted a capacity-building workshop at the Port Edward Library Hall on August 18, bringing together local stakeholders to discuss environmental management and conservation.
Representatives from the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) Environmental Services, and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife attended the session, facilitated by DFFE’s Thabisile Xulu.
As part of the practical session, RNM’s Sikhumbuzo Khumalo identified alien invasive plants in the adjacent green area, and provided attendees with an opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge.
The workshop was attended by local conservancy committee members, ratepayer organisations, estate agents and conservationists.
Umtamvuna Marine Conservancy chairperson Renée Alcock thanked GP Security and Landesol Nursery for sponsoring refreshments.
“Workshops such as these are important in building knowledge and strengthening cooperation between local stakeholders in protecting our natural environment,” said Alcock.
