‘An education crisis looms’
As parents we will not sit back and watch our children's futures being compromised.

DEAR Editor,-
The standard of education is at an all time low. One foundation phase and two sport teachers who are experienced SGB teachers had their contracts terminated as the governing body felt they were no longer required?
However the governing body advertised new positions for an IT, media and Zulu teacher. A letter signed by the entire foundation phase department was written to the SGB, outlining the needs of the department and hence pupils were not even looked at.
The outcome of this poor decision made was that management was told to utilise these new staff members, even though they are not qualified teachers. The newly-appointed IT and media teachers are now teaching foundation, yet they were hired to do something totally different. Our children have not been given proper homework since the start of the term.
Furthermore, the school has a swimming pool and the new teachers are not willing to take pupils to the pool without a lifeguard. This is a life skill that our children are being deprived of. The two previous teachers, amongst others, have over the years taken pupils to the pool without lifeguards present and now they are using this as an excuse to not teach swimming.
The Department of Education needs to step in because as parents we will not sit back and watch our children’s futures being comprised. A qualified foundation phase teacher needs to replace the unqualified one as soon as possible.
