Council to review nudist beach decision

A final decision will be made at the next council meeting in March.

HIBISCUS Coast Municipality council could still review its resolution approving parts of Mpenjati beach as a nudist friendly beach.

At a council meeting held at the HCM council chambers on Tuesday, the Concerned Citizens of HCM, a group of religious leaders, made a presentation requesting council to review its decision.

Reverend Mike Effanga tabled the grounds of their objections. He presented to council research done by the organisation on why the beach should not be approved.

The group of religious leaders first met with the HCM municipal manager, Max Mbili, and the political leadership in November last year, after the municipality had exhausted public consultation and the decision on the nudist friendly beach had been made final.

At that meeting it became clear that there was a need for further interaction on the matter. The group motivated its objections on moral and ethical considerations, legal issues, environmental laws, social and cultural beliefs and economic issues.

As council had resolved the matter the group was advised that if it wanted the matter reopened it would have to make a presentation to full council to request that the resolution be rescinded.

After long discussions council had to vote. Four councillors voted that the resolution be rescinded, while 36 councillors requested that the resolution be taken at the next council meeting in March.
