‘Illegal pub must be closed’

Further information received revealed that the licence has been illegally obtained.

DEAR Editor,-

About two years ago a tavern in extension 3, Margate, was closed by the Liquor Board. The reason for the closure was because of the owner’s total disregard for the rules and regulations that govern liquor licence conditions.

This was the conclusion of the Liquor Board in a SI 1 hearing held at the Margate Police Station. A letter was written by the Liquor Board revoking the liquor licence with the ruling that no liquor was to be sold at erf 1516, Jan Smuts Drive, Margate in future.

To our amazement a couple of days ago a team of builders moved in and started renovating the inside. When asked by a member of the public what was happening, he was told that ‘a church would be opened soon’.

Some investigations led to the truth about what was really happening and we have since learned that a new establishment where alcohol is to be sold will be opening. Information received also revealed that the licence has been illegally obtained.

Residents in extension 3, around the Seaslopes parking area, are not looking forward to this because there is a bottle store and pub already in existence on the street. It is also worth bearing in mind that there is a high school less than 500m away and drug use amongst the youth is already out of control. We therefore ask authorities to act speedily in closing down this illegal pub.
