TWO suspected illegal hunters, aged 45 and 65 years, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court today (Monday) after they were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Mhelomnyama last Friday.
Two officers from Port Shepstone crime intelligence gathering, together with Sergeant Joe Cele and Sergeant Mbuso Ndlovu from Port Shepstone K9 unit, stopped a vehicle carrying five men.
Police arrested suspected illegal hunters and seized unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said the officers also found hunting dogs and a dead bush pig in the vehicle.
“In addition, two 303 rifles with 10 rounds and a 9mm pistol with 10 rounds were also found,” she said.
The hunters were taken to Mehlomnyama police station, and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and illegal hunting.
The other three men were released.
Lt-Col Wiid said the dead pig was confiscated and the vehicle was impounded.
