K9 takes a bite out of crime

Heartfelt thanks go out the officers in blue and their decicated canine companions.

DOGS joined the desperate fight against crime in the hard hit suburbs of Uvongo, Margate and Ramsgate in recent weeks.

The beleaguered communities believe that Rex, Fudge and their highly skilled handlers from the K9 Unit in Pietermaritzburg certainly helped to make the coast a safer place.

The Village Tavern in Margate also showed its appreciation and sponsored meals for Constable Jacky Marais and Rex as well as Constable Earl Ward and Fudge for a send-off on their last evening.

The K9 team helped local police and Wolf Security with encouraging results.

Rowan Adamson, a Margate resident, met the team after his home had been broken into eight times. He said he was amazed at how committed they all were to their jobs.

“They often work endless hours and go way beyond the call of duty. We just want them to know that the South Coast is extremely grateful,” he said.

“It was a fantastic partnership that worked so well and it is a sad day that they have had to leave,” said Mark Thomas, Wolf Security’s tactical response manager.

Unfortunately, the K9 team didn’t leave their coastal shift unscathed.

During one chase after a robber, Fudge was cut by razor wire and had to receive 10 stitches to his leg.
