Taxi passenger dies after being shot in stomach

A stray bullet aimed at the taxi driver hit the passenger who was seated in the front.

A GUNMAN who opened fire on a taxi driver during a robbery in Gcilima, near Ramsgate last Saturday shot a woman passenger dead.

A stray bullet which was meant for the taxi driver hit the woman in the stomach.

The taxi  was driving from Izingolweni to Margate and, at the Khuzane bus stop while he was dropping off passengers, a man seated in the front took out a firearm and demanded money from him.

“The driver escaped from the taxi and fled,” said police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka.

“The gunman fired several shots which missed the driver but a woman seated next to the taxi driver was shot once. The gunman then grabbed the woman’s handbag and fled the scene,” said Captain Mfeka.

The woman, Thandeka Happiness Khandayo (35), was rushed to the Gcilima Clinic were she died on arrival.

After investigations, Margate police received information on the gunman and arrested him later that night.

Thabane Ncane (28) appeared in the Ramsgate court on Tuesday this week and the case was postponed for further investigation. He remains in custody. Margate police is investigating a murder and a robbery case.
